Cruise liners dock in Fortaleza’s commercial port and passengers disembarking for a shore excursion have to walk around 200 metres to reach the port entrance where taxis line up. Passengers eager to shop only have to take a short five minute journey to Mercado Central Market where souvenirs, leather goods, wood carvings and sand paintings can be bought.
Within the town sites, worth a visit include the Cathedral and Fortaleza Square. A trip to Praia de Meireles Beach is also highly recommended. A great idea for a guided tour from Fortaleza is the Ceara coast, starting with the Beberibe region and Morro Branco where passengers can buy local crafts. Visitors can then be taken on a drive around rocky labyrinths and sand dunes by buggy. Cruisers can opt for a horseback ride along the cliffs, or a ride in a Jangada - a small sailboat - to nearby grottoes.
