Aswan port is a disembarkation point for cruise passengers on a tour up the Nile, and ships usually travel here from Luxor to the high dam at Aswan.
From Aswan many visitors choose to take a short five minute ferry ride to nearby Elephantine Island and St Simeon’s Monastery – an abandoned 7th century fortress, a tour of which takes around three and a half hours. Other attractions to see whilst in Aswan include Aswan Museum, the Dam and the Temple Isis at Philae.
Abu Simbel is a spectacular monument and well worth a visit. All these places are routinely included on a guided tour of Aswan – and, due to government restrictions this is by far the best way to enjoy the sights.
Another idea for a shore excursion to Aswan is to experience a real flavour of Middle Eastern culture as well as bag a few bargains in colourful Aswan Market.
